Papua New Guinea Coffee – Kongo B

The arabica plant didn’t arrive in Papua New Guinea until the 1920s – in the form of the legendary Jamaican Blue Mountain bean – after which point the country’s commercial output ratcheted up. But infrastructure remained stubbornly basic across the land, while PNG’s highlands – where the coffee magic really happens today – didn’t experience any known outsider contact at all until the 1930s.

Unsurprising, then, that PNG’s coffee is produced primarily by smallholders. So what to expect if you buy Papua New Guinea coffee beans? With PNG’s tribal politics and hundreds upon hundreds of native languages, a standard profile is evasive: the end-product possibilities are as teeming as the rainforest. That’s partly why we’ve partnered with Kongo coffee, an independent producer based in Simbu province. They work with local small farmers, providing education and investment to elevate the quality and provide support for the community.
